So as most of you know, a few months ago five of the Mag 8 decided that we were going to Mexico - we had originally planned to go to our place in Nag's Head to give them a little east coast exposure, but when Kellie got knocked up (see previous post) we had to change that since she is scheduled to be giving birth that week...
So Matt and Kell, Joe and Tiffany and I decided to come down to a place Kellie's grandparents could get for free in Cabo San Lucas. Well, yesterday we hopped a flight and headed down and I'll be giving daily updates as to what's going on.
First let me say this - these updates would not be at all possible if it weren't for Tiff and her photography skills - all of these pictures she took - and with the exception of any underwater photos, almost all will be from her. Kell took the video that you'll see - seriously both of them are awesome and let Joe , Matt and I can play around and do whatever we want...
So now on to the pictures...
So the first thing we did when we got to Cabo was hit up the grocery store for some essentials - PB&J, bottled water, Doritoes, Pineapple... and Octopus... you can't tell, but that's octopus on ice that Joe's pointing to... and it was gross...
After that we got to the Villa - Kellie's grandparents were kind enough to hook us up so didn't have to pay squat... this is what the interior of the living room looks like - this is where I, the soltero of the group, sleeps while the married couples take the two bedrooms. We go there around ten at night so we didn't see the view until the morning...
This is what it looks like from out balcony in the morning - the sunrise woke me up at quarter to six, which was fine because today was a 15-mile day for the marathon training and I was able to get it ALL in (yeah that's right...) before things got started and before it got too hot outside...
So we headed to the beach around 10:00 and chilled there until lunch... this is the main beach strip of the Sea of Cortez here in Cabo - there are lots of restaurants and cafes and people hanging about. There are also tons of people trying to sell crap - blankets, glass stirrers, puka shell necklaces, and silver, sunglasses...
And Joe, with no intention to buy, stopped every one of them to talk...
So after a quick lunch of PB&J and pineapple, we hopped a boat and headed out to what's called Lover's Beach and Divorce Beach, a small peninsula where one side faces the Sea of Cortez and one side faces the Pacific Ocean...
The place is pretty famous for this arch, on the end of the peninsula seperating the two bodies of water - there are tons of rock formations that seem to jut out of the water from Hell itself... our boat guide told us they are volcanic formations, but we're not really sure that's true... but the rocks are rad...
Anyway, on the Pacific side, we found some pretty gnarly waves. You don't get a good feel for the size of the things here, but this is a cool picture of Matt, Joe and me simultaneously jumping into the surf...
In order to get a good picture of the power of the waves on this side, check this video out...
And yes, as a matter of fact that is Kellie being pushed over by the shear force of the wave...while she was sitting down filming us... and no, that's not the only time that happened... I feel like in this video you can really get a feel for just how close the waves were breaking on the shore, and that if you got worked in one, you were in for a ride...
So after I spent about 45 minutes diving into waves and got worked on three straight waves (my body being contorted in ways only Indian shaman could think up), and on top of that having been playing in the ocean all day AND running 15 miles that morning, I called no joy and hightailed it out of there before another wave could suck me back in...
This will give you another pretty good picture to judge the ferocity of the waves... we have a ton of these and we all look pretty puny in them... It was like Poseiden himself was playing games with little ragdolls...
So that pretty much summed up our first day - we got back from the beach and ate at this great little restaurant called "The Trailer Park," where you have to order chicken with WOW sauce... seriously it's amazing...
